VOLUNTEERING

HOW TO VOLUNTEER:

We all want to help our great city rebuild, however there are certain steps to follow when volunteering. 

DO:

• Call 205-248-5045 and tell them your specific skill-sets so that they can put you in an area that needs your help the most. 
• Donate Blood

• Image Makers Salon on University Blvd is an accepting location for United Way. Bottled Water, snacks, small meals (no cooking required), personal care items (deodorant, shampoo, soap, tooth brushes and tooth pastes, etc). Call (205) 366-1986
• Locklear Automotive office in Tuscloosa at 550 Skyland Blvd East is now an official Red Cross drop-off center. All donations, including cash, will be accepted (water, food, clothes, diapers, toiletries, etc). Call 205-799-4421
• Volunteer Area
• Tuscaloosa: St. Mathias Episcopal Church, across from Walmart at 2310 Skyland Blvd.
•  Check Facebook and see what certain groups need help with.

• Red Cross
• Ttown Never Down

DON'T:

• Don't try to go to an area on your own.  Many areas are restricted and your help will be better used through these different areas.
• Don't give up even if it takes awhile for you to be contacted to help

SAFETY FIRST!

DAMAGED BUILDINGS
The tornado has destroyed many buildings in Tuscaloosa.  Many buildings have been destroyed completely, however, there many that still partially stand.  WE URGE YOU NOT TO ENTER PARTIALLY DESTROYED BUILDINGS.  We understand that many of your belongings may still be within these structures, but it is important to remember that many of these buildings are still structurally unsound. Entering these damaged structures is very unsafe and can put yourself (as well as others) in danger. Here are some tips on what to do if you need to enter a damaged building:

TIPS:
1.)  Find the nearest Fire or Police personnel and explain what exactly you are looking for inside the building.
2.)  Do not try to enter these buildings even if some areas look safe.
3.)  Encourage others not to enter damaged buildings.
4.) Only enter the building after being told specifically by police or fire personnel.
REASONING:
1.)  Many buildings have been shaken greatly by the storm and may not show any visible damage, however they still may have damage to the foundation or other areas on the structure.
2.)  Recovering items within the house is no reason to lose your life over.
3.)  When entering a damaged building, you not only put your own life in risk but also the lives of those around you. A building collapse can injure many people in the surrounding area. 


LOOTING
In a disaster situation, looting can be an issue.  Many people feel as though they should take the law into their own hands.  EVEN AFTER A DISASTER,  ALL LAWS STILL ARE PRESENT! This seems obvious to some, however it is important to still address this issue.  Some home owners have said "You Loot, We Shoot." DO NOT TAKE THE LAW INTO YOUR OWN HANDS! Contrary to popular belief, you will be arrested if you shoot at looters, or do any other illegal means of stopping them.  It is still illegal to brandish a firearm in public.  Here are some tips with dealing with looting:

TIPS:
1.) If you suspect looting, contact police personnel and explain the situation.
2.) It is not your "Civic Duty" to personally stop looters. You can be harmed in the process.
3.) Take down descriptions of the looters and their vehicles.

REASONING:
1.) It is the police's job to handle crime.  Let them.  They have the tools and training to deal with situations like these.
2.) Saving your possessions is no reason to lose your life over.
3.) By calling the police, you are helping other people in your area. The police will handle the situation and prevent future looting in your neighborhood.
